Ironing Out the Wrinkles

January 1, 2007

We have a nice New Years' tradition. With two other families who we've known since before we became families, we journey to Tucson and (without malice) take over a resort or hotel. The kids run wild; the adults eat and drink and talk and pretend not to notice the boys are lobbing water balloons over the balcony railing again. We get to know a lot of security folks on a first name basis this way.

This year I spent a good part of the time holed up in our room, ironing out the wrinkles from this blog...

A Blog Without Comments

December 28, 2006

A blog without comments is a lonely thing. Somehow in switching from Movable Type to Drupal, probably while mucking around in MySQL with inexperienced hands, I lost all the comments on this blog.

The sadness I feel makes me realize how important the people who comment here have become to me. Our conversations—our relationships—have been lost, and what's left are only my own words, alone. A conversation of one.

Drupal-ized!

December 20, 2006

For a long time I've wanted to move my blog from MT over to Drupal, and last week I finally started the process. As a result, this site is a mess. I hope you'll bear with me as I figure out how to move all the old content over and get the site running again.

Setting a Decent Table

December 7, 2006

I guess the best way to do this is just to admit it straight out. Okay. Well. So. Recently I... I...

I used a table for layout.

There. I said it. Yes, I know, I know. But it was late. We were behind schedule. It wasn't a whole page or anything. Just a box across the top of the content on one page that would not stay put. I tried everything. I was desperate. I mean, what was I going to tell my boss? That I'd spent an entire day trying to get three lines of text to float to the left of an icon? I was going to tell him that was the latest holdup?
